My Reviews
Ivan Doig writes beautifully and eloquently especially when his story touches on his nuclear family and his experiences growing up in Montana. This book is a wonder - with an engaging story of cowboys, the West and good people doing what is necessary to work and survive.
This book takes you on a laugh and tear filled journey through the main character's perspective. This is a caring and giving man who has suffered through a tragic and devastating accident that was literally lifechanging for him. His road trip with his new charge is filled with witty and slightly raucous adventure as both move forward in life with the lot they are left holding. A little Vonnegut sensibility weaves itself throughout the narrative. Loved it.
A dramatic and difficult story about an emotionally abusive marriage and what happens after a catastrophic accident. Well-written though a tale that is hard to contemplate!
A difficult discussion given to a son with honesty. As a white woman who has enjoyed the privilege of being white and woman in America ....it gave me much to think about and many uncomfortable moments as I remembered events in my own life and how easy it is to be complacent. Write on Mr. Coates....this is a discussion that needs to happen and continue happening until we all get the message and start making real changes rather than the superficial ones.
A wonderful story of mother daughter relationships and how family characteristics are passed along generation to generation. Also a good introduction to the Swedish culture and history.
Great detective story with a plot that twists and turns as one mystery after another enters the narrative. Well written and informative imagery and descriptions of 18th century China. Love the detective sleuth and scholar Li Deu
Ove, a man who has experienced some many challenging things in his life, cannot face the challenge of living alone without the love of his wife. This is a beautiful story of the power of love, romantic, familial, neighborly, and so many other aspects of this many-sided prism that you can't put it down. Ove's story is told to us with humor and wit. The relationships he grudgingly builds as the story progresses captures all of us.
