My Reviews
I thought this book was well written. I couldn't help myself, I was assigned to read a certain amount for our next gathering and I just kept going. It was not like I thought at all. You get an idea of what is happening in the first few chapters but then the author takes you on a fantastic ride. Though God and faith are mentioned in the story, I believe those topics could have been expanded on.
I like the idea of the book and the subject matter. However, the premise of this book was confusing to our members. Very few of us got that the book was trying to tell us to be grateful for God's providence in all matters, good, bad, pretty, or ugly. The author confuses us by using too many words to paint the picture of her story.
This is a well written book that really lets you peek into the lives of Nisrina and her family. While it is a work of fiction, you still come away with a better understanding of the role family placed in society at the time as well as the role of women. The universal thread that links us all is love and family whether it be the family we are born into or the family of our making.
This love story begins with flawed people and ends with twisted sick people inflicting damage and pain on each other for different reasons. One because he is afraid of admitting that his life is not what he wants it to be and the other's desire to stay in control and have things happen on her terms. I could not believe how twisted and selfish these two are and it was hard to figure out how the "victim" in the relationship is until it IS revealed.
This beautifully written story takes some getting used to when you begin the book but it is worth it! The story of Roseanne McNulty is heartbreaking. You get a good idea of what the times were like and what was going on in Ireland at the time.
I liked this book. It is addictive, suspenseful but not really scary. There are times that the jumps between present day and the past are jarring. It's important to note the dates and the beginning of the chapters. I read this book in several days and found myself several times wanting to go back and reread previous chapters if there were multiple days in between readings. This book is very well researched and the forensics used to identify the bones is explained well. The climax (the ID of the killer) is a bit unexpected, and there were a few loose ends that never were answered to my satisfaction, but overall, I enjoyed the book.
I enjoyed this story about family and how we fit into them. The story about the grandparents was kind of surprising. The story about the family as they age and the kids move out and start their own families was interesting. Interesting to see how the kids deal with their aging parents. Who or how you become family....
I liked the story and the characters. I figured out the mystery about part way through the telling. I thought the writing was well done and you really felt for the characters. Sometimes their story got a little clouded by things that in the end didn't matter except to reveal bias of the times not necessarily the characters.
I did not enjoy this book at all. I found the long list of characters to be hard to follow and after a while I just didn’t care to figure out how they fit into the little group. I was quite upset about the portrayal of marriage and faith in this book. Faith of any kind is boiled down to a set of rules that the old inflict on the young and the young perceive as outdated and old fashioned. Many of the characters have been married and divorced multiple times. One character leaves his wife though she’s done nothing wrong. She’s just boring and dull. Although the woman he leaves her for turns out to have lived a past he can’t handle and he quickly tries to come back. It is hard to call this a mystery because the murderer reveals himself pretty quickly into the first chapter. I
