My Reviews
Great book club classic. I feel as if I've visited 1920 Brooklyn with my friends and that we have a mutual friend in Francie Nolan.
The American Spirit at its best here! So well written. It gave me a heartfelt understanding of the times they lived in. Joe is a classic overcomer. It inspires us all. Everyone at our book club enjoyed this book...even the hardcore fiction-istas.
There were so many different responses from our various members that it's hard to qualify this book as a great success or a dismal failure. "Unique, Fascinating progression of characters, Thought-Provoking, Self-indulgent, Incomprehensible, Unrealistic characters, Flashes of brilliance, Beautifully expressed philosophies." Be ready for a mixed discussion!
This quality of literature comes about once in a generation! Genius descriptions of a gorgeous (sometimes bleak) setting and complicated characters. The story, though well known, is told so beautifully that you want to read on forever. As an audio-book it is particularly engrossing! Read this book even if you've read it a dozen times!
I can see why Donna was fascinated with her grandmother's stories. If she were my grandmother I would have been too. But the book fell short. No brilliant writing, no captivating characters. The message that life was hard and people were flawed hit the mark tho. Maude was a strong woman.
This book is unlike any memoir we've read. A brilliant young woman, disabled by TB, develops into an optimistic, acutely honest, richly creative woman. She takes chances, pursues dreams, loves fiercely despite odds against her. This character will stay with me.
Prepare to be left with questions. Detailed facts and logistics are left out in favor of the beautiful prose of Katharine's observations of the scenery, events and people who interested her. She died before she could write enough for us to know her fully. Not an autobiography. It's a memoir and a very satisfying, enlightening one!
The extensive research on this amazing man has been translated into a readable, accessible story of a life of bravery and faith. If you think this is too fat a book or too dry a history THINK AGAIN. Very well done! Momentous!
I like a book with redemption. In this book the characters got what they deserved, by and large. It was a feel-good story where your underdog favorite comes out on top.
