My Reviews
One of our club members said she thought it was the best book we had read. Very well developed, unusually written and so enjoyable! Look forward to the movie. So much symbolism.
Focus was on the revitalization of Coney Island and the various personalities incorporated in such. Some members felt the characters had not been developed.
They called her the Mother Theresa of Pakistan! Many thought middle school girls should read this, but a couple found it difficult to read due to the subject matter.
Many of us could relate to the time period and personalities described by the author. There were many chances for reflection and introspection. The book also reinforced the fact that we cannot always control the destiny of others and that things are not always as they seem.
Some of our group wanted to visit this place! Enjoyed watching the evolvement of healing in the characters. Noting that relationships are very important. Hoping for a sequel.
Tried to do the author chat, but had some technical difficulty. Never got sound only text-making communication difficult. This book was full of surprises, culturally, professionally and for some the ending. Some in our group are big dance followers and loved that aspect, while others enjoyed learning the cultural responses. We are all strong women and relished seeing the various women develop throughout the book.
Our Group found this book very inspiring even trying to eat at an ethnic eatery for lunch discussion! King Peggy demonstrated determination, perseverance, patience and skills that few have especially across thousands of miles. Some did have difficulty with the many references to "spirits",but realized it was a cultural belief.
This book raised so many questions of a social concern with our group. The hardest thing to deal with was the filth described. Everyone felt the writing was very good and the book was compared on more than one occasion to The Glass House by Walls.
It was hard to relate to someone of our generation who had such a hard time balancing things, yet enjoyed so much of the finer things. Her priorities seemed off and for being a journalist many expected more.
A lot of discussion on this book, even to the point of outside exploration! It is surprising how many secrets can be kept and many wondered if that would remain so today. Great book with nice tie-ins to previous reads.
Awesome book! You felt like you were right there. The descriptives were amazing and the character building made you feel like they were right next to you. Even if you knew nothing about about rowing, this book will reel you in!
We finally determined this book was all about families and their secrets. We also have a couple of artists in our group who could really relate to the NEGATIVE space references! This book took us down many roads of discussion...parenting, love, AIDS, family systems, etc.
This was a book all about secrets. It covered many issues. The author nailed the descriptions of the school moms. There a lot of characters and keeping a list of who is who is helpful.
The group felt the beginning was a bit slow and confusing as to who is speaking. Once in, the book carries itself. Some bawled like babies, others were cheering characters on!
One must pay attention to the hidden meanings of things. You get to the end sooo quickly.
Was shocked that it ended when it did. Some wanted a clearer picture. This was a quick read...don\\\'t read too early or you will be confused come club time! If you liked The Woman in Gold, you will like this!
Several members sad this book had some really sad effects on them. The Whip starts out a bit slow and you know that there is more to come. It pays to hang in there. Naïveté and street smarts are evident even in the same person!
This was a most enjoyable history lesson, travelogue, romance and etiquette lesson! Several of us want a sequel.
This truly was many stories or adventures all wrapped up in one neat little package. I wish I had known about this language when I got married. What a service that could be!
Initially it was thought this book would be apropos given our elections this year and all the campaigning, but it only added to the sickening feeling of enough already! Most club members did not even finish the book; some jumped ahead to the end. I was personally insulted by the language used and I can cuss like the next one, but some words are off the list. If this is what is involved behind the scenes, we do need to start over beginning with the process and not just with who we elect. That is often a decision of who is the lesser evil.
This book enabled many of us to go back in time and share our experiences our memories of weddings I our past clear back to our grandparents.
If u like historic fiction, this is for you. Almost too detailed. The dressmaker's loyalty quality is almost too good to be true. Provides new perspectives on the assassination of President Lincoln. Had read some of the other clubs' reviews and we had more + things to say than previously written.
Our first thought was 'why', but after continued reading it was revealed that she was most passionate about life and how things work. She was very lucky to have the support group she had.
It was a book that "challenged" me and I need that from time to time.
Several clubbies wanted this book to continue to tie up some loose ends. They gave it 4.5 stars and think it would do well as a movie. We learned that the host chose this book because of its cover, but we are glad she did. It was a most interesting read!
We had some good discussion around this book as it has several themes. This is a first in a series of 3 and most were already plotting who was going to pick the next one to read as their choice.
We wondered if there was going to be a romantic twist in the next book; If the younger sister was going to join the circus or will there be a move??
Enjoyed the metaphors. The confusion part came with the story’s back and forth in time tendencies. Our club’s rating was a 4.5. One person came in not liking it but her CD was damaged and was not able to know how the bk ended. After she learned what she missed she gave it a 5!
For an author of this caliber this was a primary story line. It took a long time to tell such a short story. Very sad.
