My Reviews
This book was thought provoking. It revealed many truths that were kept from those of us who grew up white here in the South during the Civil Rights Movement. Our discussion led us to be reflective about the amount of prejudice we each grew up with. Each one if the 6 of us who read the book was changed in some way. It felt like doors and windows were flung open and our understandings broadened and grew deeper.
I felt like I was reading a 5th grade book report. Wjile I learned some facts I didn\\\'t know~ the book felt like it didn\\\'t have any heart in it. It was choppy and didn\\\'t flow for me. Being in a Bookclub makes me read books I wouldn\\\'t normally choose to read and this was definitely one of those for me! It was a quick read and good timing to read it in the Lenten season.
I really liked this book. It was fascinating to find out about the constraints women lived with and what is was like to live in a boarding house. It is a coming of age and growing up story and a love story. A falling in love s-l-o-w-l-y story. The characters changed and grew. I loved her descriptions of the Tiffany Chapel @ the 1893 World's Fair.
