My Reviews
I kept waiting for the story to get started. The highlight was the mention of other "period" notables. Mr. Morse of the Morse Code, Walt Whitman, etc. I found that interesting.
I connected with Beth finally taking time for herself and picking up her pen to write again. This is representative of so many women who put aside their aspirations to raise a family and keep the home fires burning. I went to college at age 35 (day classes with the 17 & 18 year olds) and it was great!
The "real" story of Scout being disillusioned by hearing Atticus say racist things comes too far at the end of the book. That's basically the entire emphasis of the story. Also, the age of the reader, in my opinion, will determine how the message is perceived.
Set in Elizabeth, NJ and I spent 63 of my 71 years not too far away. Related to \\\\\\\"time & period\\\\\\\" references (Zenith TV, Miss Rheingold Contest, MG fire in 1980, etc.) Slow start, but once all the characters are identified and start to interact, it was great reading. Satisfying ending.
Very well written. Set in Hitler's war days, but not a "war" story. More of a story of family, personalities, doing what you have to do to survive. Very interesting.
Although there were many interesting things about Kenya and the character's life, the author took too long to tell the story. I kept checking to see how many more pages there were!
A "change of pace" read. Different & interesting.
Absolutely true. As an ESL Literacy Tutor in 1998, I had a Russian woman tell me the same story except, as a 5 yr old with a 3 yr old brother & 24 yr old mother surviving the Germans invading & bombing Stalingrad. Right down to a German soldier discovering them. Hiding & instead of killing them, he told them to leave & where & how to go. He was the Captain Beck from The Nightingale!
