Well written, fascinating story of a contemporary, half native American 'orphan' and an Irish immigrant 'orphan' who was transplanted from NYC to Minnesota in 1929 by one of the Orphan Trains: a '75 year social experiment.' These two become friends in 2011, one is 17 and the other is 91. Their stories contrast and compliment one another, as the past is revealed and the future opens up.
This is book, appreciated and sold best to Foodies, and as a travel book perhaps for those going to the LaMancha, planes area of Spain. It is more than this, but without a desire to know more about the culture and artisan cheese making, or a real appreciation for the small village life and rhythm of Europe - it's a hard slog. It's an erudite book I think, with a hefty dose of story-telling, a larger than life character, and an American's author's fascination with him and his 'philosophy of life.'
