My Reviews
A good non-fiction book with plenty of stories about people you've probably heard of but don't know much about. We were amazed at some of the weird personalities.
Although the language is very old-fashioned, I would recommend this book to everyone, especially since everyone probably already knows the story. Many of our current sayings about the holidays can be summed up by quotes from this book. "Bah Humbug" "God bless us, everyone"
Although most of our club thought the book was okay, we all agreed that we didn't really like it. The writing seemed pedestrian and shallow. We didn't like the main character. Maybe most young people talk and act that way but she was not a likable character. The story had too many unanswered questions. For example, why didn't her husband suspect his sister?
For the most part, we felt like the author was trying to solve some internal conflict of her own. Didn't work.
Our book club was thoroughly enchanted by this book and by the powerful women who stuck to their ideals and beliefs. The book was exceptionally well written and held our interest throughout. Would highly recommend this to other book clubs. We had an excellent discussion via Skype with the author, and I highly recommend that other club reach out to her.
This story was a wonderful acknowledgment of how we can all change as people. It also reminds us of a simpler time where people also had problems to deal with. I think this book was wonderfully written and would like to see a sequel detailing the lives of everyone after the depression.
