The idea that a clan from Scotland would remain more or less intact in a rural town in America from the late 1740s until modern day seemed like a impossible convolution. I understand why the author had it in the story. She wanted Cam to have a stronger sense of responsibility towards the people in town then normal, but it was hard to swallow.
