Like a Vitamin - good for you but ...

Our book club was glad we read this selection as few of us had read this classic. Most of us found it dated, stilted, and boring, especially when compared to current mysteries such as \\\\\\\"Gone Girl.\\\\\\\" We admire Ms. Christie\\\\\\\'s career but acknowledge that the mystery genre has changed quite some time in the past 80 years.

This Title Launched Great Discussion

Not all members in our book club enjoyed reading this book, but all appreciated insights gained from the narrator, a teenage boy with Asperger's Syndrome. In fact, it fostered one of our most dynamic discussions to date.

Fiction Based on an Actual Event

Our book club found much to discuss among the pages of Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. The story, told in beautiful sentences, was certainly a departure from ordinary life. As the entire novel takes place within the walls of a home, it is primarily a character study. The pace dragged in the middle, but was that the intention of the author to prove a point to readers?

Four Blue Stars in the Window

Our diverse book club thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir about the author's large Nebraska extended family and their experiences of living through the Depression, the Dust Bowl, and having four sons serve in WWII. The author's extensive research is evident but never boring, and our members appreciated several aspects of the family's experiences, including life in a large family during challenging times and military service in WWII. Family photos scattered throughout the book help readers visualize these extraordinary yet ordinary members of the Eymann family.

We Loved This Novel Based on Real People

Every member of our diverse book club thoroughly enjoyed this amazing book. Our group usually spends 45 minutes discussing a book, but our conversation about "The Invention of Wings" was twice that long. Our group recommends that future readers read the first portion of the Author's Notes (at the end of the book) before reading the book so they understand the book is based on the lives of actual sisters.

We enjoyed the characters in this novel and the beautiful writing throughout. We sincerely hope Mr. Kidd is working on another novel for us to savor.

Members of our book club enjoyed this book, but felt bogged down in some of the descriptive language. The writing was beautiful, and the author's love for animals and nature is evident. We had hoped to become better acquainted with some of the characters in the book. The ending seemed disjointed.
