My Reviews
It's easy to identify with this story - everyone has someone in their group of family and friends who has been touched, if not by Alzheimers, by some other chronic debilitating disease. While the central character is over-idealized prior to the diagnosis, the story of her degeneration, especially told from her perspective, is all too real. This book helped me connect on a very personal level with other book club members as we discussed issues of quality of life and how our lives are being affected by our own aging parents.
The two main characters in this book are strong women trapped in different ways. Their relationship and how they make their way to a kind of freedom is a fascinating story that on its own will capture you. There are levels of meaning - symbolism, complex characters and questions about human nature - that make this an ideal book to discuss with others. To my surprise, I found it's actually based on some fascinating women who were early abolitionists and speakers for women's rights. One of the top 5 books we've read as a club.
This book had a great cover and an interesting premise, but for me it didn't deliver. The story of 3 sisters raised in Texas who end up reconnecting in New York could have been a thoughtful exploration of character, growth, and relationships. Instead it was the backdrop for a fairly shallow romance of the gorilla-meets-girl variety. Reminded me of the Harlequin romance novels I read in high school. Great for a beach read, but not enough material for a deep book club discussion.
The story in this book reads like a romance novel; grumpy main character meets transformational woman who understands his inner pain and manages to connect with him. There's not much subtlety. The story arc is predictable, and the more interesting characters are the neighbors, not Ove, but we don't get much insight into their motivations. The language is simplistic and the rhythm never varies. Yes, I shed a few tears at the end, as I do for every Hallmark movie. I think many book clubs would like this book, but I was hoping for more.
