My Reviews
This true story is a page-turner and inspiring reading. It is a \\\"must read\\\" for anyone who cares about educating our children, now and in the future. The people in this story come to life and you are there, rooting for them. The paperback version with a slightly different subtitle was released in 2013 (Saving the School: One Woman\\\'s Fight for the Kids that Education Reform Left Behind). This paperbook contains an epilog updating the reader on the book\\\'s main figures (including the status of the school). The book is available as a Kindle download as well.
The first half of the book was a page turner. Much of the second half found me skimming much of the material just to find out how the story ended. I found Theo's life very depressing at times. There were so many instances in the beginning of the story where, had he opened up to those offering him help, his life might have been so much better. But, of course, kids like him can fall through the cracks of child welfare, no matter how good the system, so the author decided to show us that gritty side of life. I would read a sequel (should the author decide to write one) just to see if Theo's life turns happier later in life.
Most of our group did not seem to enjoy the book, but it made for a full hour of discussion. So in that respect it was good for a group to read.
