The Child Catchers

Kathryn Joyce's polemic on intercountry adoption within the Christian evangelical movement is sure to start a complex discussion on race, class, privilege and what means to truly help those in need. Perhaps too controversial for mixed book clubs but a worthwhile read for Christian and secular groups alike.

The Empathy Exams: Essays by Leslie Jamison

The Empathy Exams

Our book group was split almost evenly on opinions/feelings about the book. One half feeling that they were able to think about empathy in different ways and evaluate how they empathized with the different situations presented. Others felt that Jamison brought situations back to herself to often. All agreed that the book was a complex reading experience.

An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine

An Unnecessary Woman

Our book group found this book to be beautifully written. Prose as poetry was what one member described it as. Those who struggled with the book had anticipated something more plot driven and were thrown off with waiting for 'something' to happen and had difficulty following because the narrative was not linear. Others liked that it gave you a view of one woman's inner world and how deeply the character was developed. All said at some point they were amazed and even felt a little inadequate by the breadth of knowledge the author had on world literary canon. On that note, anyone who likes ''books about books'' will enjoy this.
