My Reviews
Throughout reading this book I was distracted by the writing style. Not until the end do you realize why the writing works...and until the end, I must say I did not enjoy reading this book. Upon reflection and after reviewing the reading guide and subsequently thinking about the questions in the guide, I found myself liking the book more than I had while reading it.
It certainly makes you wonder what you would do if given a "death" sentence.
The discussion with the author was a great time. I enjoyed that very much.
Through his wonderful prose, the writer was able to bring me back to a time and place where technology hadn't yet gotten its hold on society. A quiet, lovely time, when people spoke to each other engaging in real conversation. A time when courtesy and manners was expected and given without question. Rose and Morrie brought a beautiful spirit to the Milliron family, bringing out the best in everyone.
The story engaged the reader and somehow made me long for the days of the one room schoolhouse and all that that entails.
The first time I read this I was having a lot of difficulty with my in-laws, so....it gave me great satisfaction!
The problem I had with this book was that I felt it was a very long introduction...to the actual book. I kept wondering, "When is the story going to start?" I found it tedious to read and felt no connection to any of the characters. Based on the time period of the book, maybe that's what the author intended.
I was hooked after the first sentence. I savored each word, each paragraph, each chapter. I loved each character and felt a part of their lives. I LOVED THIS BOOK!
I say why not? because I think it's completely plausible that there really was a Pope Joan. With revisions made throughout history to suit the times I can absolutely believe that she may have existed. For that reason alone, I recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading a story that showed the Cheyenne as human as opposed to simply "savages". Let's face it, all men/women have the potential for savagery and this book illustrates that. While sometimes it was a little to predictable, I still enjoyed it.
This book was like torture to read. However, after discussing it with the book club, I found myself not disliking it as intensely. It was a chore to get through, not something I like in a book.
So, who corrupted whom? Was it Basil, was it Lord Henry? Was it Dorian himself? I thought this book was so well written and the discussion was fantastic.
I learned so much from this book.....and I so enjoyed the italian language throughout!
I could not stop reading this book and then the two others in the trilogy! It was like the Harry Potter series in that I felt like I watched a movie in my mind instead of just experienced a book. I recommend it, especially if you like sci-fi and fantastical stories.
I found the science fascinating and loved learning about the Lacks family butI think it could've been cut by about 150 pages. I found the book to be extremely repetitive and towards the end lost total interest.
