My Reviews
This debut from author, J. Dylan Yates, is a story that has haunted me since I read it a few months ago. The writing is brilliant and detailed and the characters Jules and Szaja/Samuel are uniquely engaging. Jules is the brave, insightful daughter of hippie parents trying to hold her household together and Szaja/Samuel, her grandfather, is a Holocaust survivor with secret demons. This story deals with domestic and child abuse in a way that educates the reader to the possibilities of healing through the generations, but does it in a way that doesn\\\'t preach or pander. The story is gritty and rough at times, tender and illuminating at others. I laughed out loud and was often brought to tears, which is my favorite combo in a book. This would make a great book club selection because of the abundance of topics the book provides, from the Holocaust to the drug culture of the \\\'70\\\'s, and at the end of the book is a wonderful Reader Guide.
