My Reviews
The 13 members of our club LOVED this book. They found it easy to read, absorbing, informative, and inspiring. It made for excellent discussion.
The wonderful thing about book club is when all our opinions come together. We felt the book got off to a slow start, but, through conversation, realized the beauty of the story was revealed through McDermott\\\'s prose and pacing. It is not a page turner, but it is a deeply satisfying read.
Of the 10 members who read the book, 7 loved it, two said so-so, one didn't care for it. I loved it. We all agreed there is much to discuss. Lots of similarities with Great Expectations, lots of literary tools, writing is superb.
Our club enjoyed this book -- especially those who are non-fiction readers -- and the others were interested in reading the sisters' tragic story.
All members loved this book. Some were a bit disappointed in the ending, I think only because they were hoping for a lingering relationship, possibly, between the characters, but that is a trifling thing. Overall, well done!
We found the book to be depressing, but interesting. The first section of the book was slow to some, but others appreciated the unreliable narrator and promises of a bigger story to come.
Our group really enjoyed discussing this book, challenging each of us to put ourselves in the characters' positions, what we would do, how we would act, what we might think, during a time when everything we hold dear is taken from us. The story was gripping, expected, yet unpredictable but, for some, the literary style could have been more expansive.
