My Reviews
Some of our members truly did not like the book. One of the objections was the brief "outline" before each chapter. "Annoying".
Others found the story about the German families and their feelings about Hitler a different and interesting approach.
Most of us felt compelled to keep reading.
This is a story primarily about racism in the south told from the perspective of a little girl. Deeper layers address family, parenting, coming of age, and the discrepancy between unquestioning belief and actual truth.
All of our club members agreed this book is beautifully written and wonderfully descriptive. The book held our interest - just wanted to keep reading until the end. A few were disappointed in the ending.
This was a light read - very light. Full of cliches and immature characters. Not worthy of a book club discussion.
Every member thought this book was riveting. It is also an important book which looks at slavery from several viewpoints. Character development was excellent.
All of our book club members thought this was a good book. Some felt it was very well written. Some found it hard to follow the timelines and characters. Many felt it began very darkly but found it was more positive as the book concluded.
For the first time in 18 months all 7 of our book club members agreed that we loved this book. The theme of a young, uneducated pioneer woman who loves life and learning and is competent and brave is one we usually find interesting. The romance is every woman's dream.
Everyone in our book club was enthralled with this portrait of Charles Lindbergh and his wife. And surprised at what kind of man he was. Unexpected.
Anne Lindbergh was a complicated woman who was a product of her time and yet transcended it.
All of our members loved the book and actually rated it 4.5 out of 5. We thought the writing was beautiful and the characters were well developed. It also has a positive theme amidst tragedy.
Our book club met and of 8 people one did not like it at all, and the other 7 thought it was just okay. The consensus was that the ending was unnecessarily contrived and unbelievable, Also, there were several themes related to characters that were brought up but not explored. Quality of writing was barely average.
