This book started off with much difficulty in reading. The author does not use much punctuation, she starts a chapter without telling you which character she is talking about until a few pages in, it is just hard to get started overall. Each of our members read and re-read the first chapter about 8 times!!
It is not "wickedly humorous", there is not one ounce of humor in it! The summary of the book sounds much better than the actual story itself. I wish it could have been written differently! Leaves you hanging in the end to make up your own ending. It was thought provoking though, and it did offer great discussion for our group.
This book was a book that was hard to put down. You wanted there to be something good to happen, so you didn't want to stop reading. It is an eye-opener of Afghanistan women and what they had and have to endure. We take so much of what we have for granted!!!! It gives a good account of the history to make you think that these 2 women in the book could be real characters, which makes the story even sadder! A great discussion at our book club, and if you have any emotions you will cry a number of times in this book! A great story teller!!
I only gave it a 3 because the first 60 pages or so were hard to get into. If it wasn't for book club and I felt I really didn't "have to" read it I would have put it down. There were so many characters and Jewish words without definistions, it was just hard.
But after those first few chapters, it ended up being a great story of true love, forgiveness, and how a different culture lives. You say the whole time "I could never live like that!"
It was a beautiful love story of a man and a woman. Also with sisters and with siblings and parents. Not until the whole story is unfolded do you truly see that. And how someone who doesn't even know you can truly care for you.
If you started it, finish it, it will be worth it!
I think this book was a good book. Not great, not bad, just good. If maybe you went through something like this in your life I believe it would be very emotional. I guess if you have any siblings, if you are a parents, or just have any emotions, it will be a great discussion book and be thought provoking for yourself.
I thought it had a great start and an amazing finish, but towards the end it bored me a little and I felt I could skim through it. The beginning kept you on the edge of your seat and scared, but then you almost got use to it, and it didn't do anything "for" me through the middle.
I would recommend it to a certain few. It was ok.
Discussing it was better than reading it somehow?!
If you want a very easy, simple read than this book is for you! Not complicated at all! If you want a book that you know how it will end once you being the book, than this book is for you! That is the only reason I would reccommend it.
I actually read it 3 days before book club and I actually forgot the names of characters and how the book ended on that third day. It isn't really good if you cannot remember a book you read.
Personally, I would not read another book by the author.
This book was deep, sad, insightful, hopeful and different. If any of us could just get past the "sad" in our lives to open up and see the hope God has for us, our lives would be changed tremendously! It is a lot about forgiveness. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I am not a "deep" thinker usually and this book goes deep! It also shows the Trinity in a whole new way. But I loved the hope this book brought! I enjoyed it and cried many tears! You could definitely read it again because it was filled with so much!
It does take a few chapters to get into but if you stick with it you are so glad you did!
It was powerful, full of faith, true beauty, terror, betrayal and it was just gripping. I hope I will half the faith that young woman did in the book.
