My Reviews
I loved this book. Sarah-Jane Stratford's historical novel is a fascinating look into the early days of the BBC during the 1920's, along with the history of women in the workplace and women's suffrage ~ can you believe a single women had to wait until age 30 in order to vote! Sarah-Jane beautifully weaves the fictional character of Maisie and the factual account of one of Briton's most influential women, Hilda Mathison. I loved Maisie journey as a meek, lacking confidence girl into a confident young lady who finds her voice with the help of her mentor ~Hilda. The story also has so many laugh out loud moments with Maisie.
Our book club had a fabulous book discussion and I would highly recommend this book for your group
If you are looking for a book to keep you up past your bedtime because you want to read one more chapter, this is the book for you! It has many twists and turns!
This book has it all... it is a story of resiliency, survival, hope, love, loss, loneliness, desperation, prejudice, determination and strength. A very likable main character that pulls at your heartstrings, a murder mystery, drama, coming of age and romance. A must read!
Our book club read “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” where Lisa See brings to life the true story of Tan Yunxisn, one of China’s first recorded female physicians from 15th century China. Lisa See is so highly skilled in writing historical fiction novels. We learned so much about Chinese society, culture, class, expectations, history and traditions - also, a bit of mystery was woven in.
