My Reviews
The tenacity of the women portrayed in this book made it very inspiring. The hardships they endured and the coping mechanisms they developed were brilliant, especially in the face of their role in society and the political climate of the day.
This is my "Book of the Year" pick. Elizabeth Gilbert completely surprised me with the amount of research that stands behind this book, not to mention a 180 degree change from any of her previous books. The heroine was fascinating & totally engaging.
This book was my over all BEST READ OF 2014! I was pleasantly surprised at the change in style and subject matter from her previous books, as well as the extensive research and scholarship that went into this work. The heroine was fascinating & totally engaging. I believe \'The Signature of all Things\' has elevated Elizabeth Gilbert to the status of a respected and serious author in our time.
Funny, quirky, but very entertaining. Laughable and light reading.
I guess there ARE actually people who live this way!
I was really looking forward to this book, but was quite disappointed. For openers, the cover depicts an AFRICAN elephant! The book is set in India, and ASIAN elephants are easily distinguished as different. The book was certainly not a \\\\\\\'page-turner\\\\\\\', although I did enjoy many of the author\\\\\\\'s descriptive phrases.
As one who has owned a business in the weight loss industry, as well as having waged my own battle with 'THE CHUB', I loved this book! It was unique in many ways. The heroine, Plum, is waiting to begin her 'real' life after bariatric surgery. The events that take place after she schedules this surgery take the reader on a wild ride of pathos, hilarity & intrigue. The cast of characters go about turning the diet & fashion industries upside down, while asking us to take another look at our society's values and messages to both me & women. Enjoy!
Maybe his best book so far, except for 'AN INNOCENT MAN'.
He's giving us a perspective that the whole nation needs to see.
As far as one reviewer's comments about stereotypical women, they are not anymore denigrated than the way the narrator describes himself.
Interesting, for sure!
A thoroughly engrossing read! This book takes the reader on the insightful journey of two diverse families, spanning 300 years. Lots of history and intriguing characters. For those who appreciate historical fiction, this book will satisfy.
This book should be required reading for anyone who has a body!
It's not an easy subject for people in our culture, but these conversations need to take place.
Enjoyed the book and the character development, as well as the ambiguous twists and turns. However, the ending was disappointing and seemed like a 'cop-out' after all that had proceeded it.
This book starts out quite interesting, despite it's stereotypical characters. Unfortunately, it dissolves into disappointing, predictable, slobbery romance that made it seem that it would never reach it's forgone conclusion. Yech!
Speaking as an RN who has worked in psych and chemical dependency for many years, I can tell you this book brought new knowledge to light. This info will be pertinent to all, impacting families and communities.
a real eyeopener and well-researched.
A well-researched history of the Eto & Shibata families of California from the early 20th century to present. Their struggles and triumphs are told through the eyes of Grace Eto Shibata and her daughter Naomi Shibata.
Originally written as a memoir for future generations, this book has caught the eye of historical societies in California and other states.
Our book club was fortunate enough to have the author present her work.
A predictable Soap Opera, well written. Clearly her earlier writing.
I will not support authors who tantalize readers with characters who stalk, torture and brutalize women.
This woman's history was news to me. I felt that they story was insightful and realistically portrayed.
This book is predictable with pointless dialog. A friend wanted me to read it, so I did. I found myself wondering why the main character was so slow to discover things that were apparent to me. I found myself skipping over the pointless descriptions. If you're a romance fan, you'll probably like it.
