My Reviews
On first reading, the book was a quick moving story, a great mystery. The second reading brought out more details, and twists and turns in the plot. Definitely a book with great depth.
Great discussion on the concept of sisterhood/friendships. Our hostess even had a Chinese fan for all of us to sign!
Our members did find the information on the life of Einstein interesting but shruggled with the amount of scientific information included in the book.
Generally, we found it shocking (the murder of Astrid's baby) and felt it left many unanswered questions. We liked the friendship theme, and someone coming into your life when you really need them. A moving slice of life about two lonely people who find each other.
Led to a great discussion on the differences between the powerlessness of the women in the novel versus the options available to the women in the western world.
Something for every woman to relate to as we grow older!
A quick paced, light summer read. There is a myriad of subplots, some of which could have easily been used as a basis of another stand-alone novel. Conflicts within the book were resolved with predictable endings.
An exploration of the classic "money doesn't mean happiness" theme in a Victorian setting.
Compelling story of a woman in a country struggling with warring factions. Her courage and religious faith are truly inspirational.
A great read. The illusion of the "fun" atmosphere of the circus world masks the hardships faced by the characters.
As a science fiction fan, I was intrigued by that aspect of the book rather than the romantic side of the novel. Other themes were more apparent on second reading. Our book club met after the movie came out and some members found that medium easier to follow than the book.
Written through the eyes of a dog, simple observations question human actions and reactions. A quick paced book.
The children rise above the dysfunctional family beginning
