My Reviews
This book drags through the first 1/3, and then picks up with the war years. I found it to be pedantic and just a chronicle of a family without any embellishments. Discussion points about this book were difficult.
Our book club was very split on this book. We got about 30 minutes worth of discussion out of it and then moved onto other topics!
This is perhaps the most difficult Jane Austin book. It proved very difficult to discuss for our book club. Many people got bogged down in the rhetoric and didn't finish. The on-line questions were too "high school essay." Love Jane Austin but not a good choice for an adult club.
This book was so difficult that is have us lots of discussion about how hard it was to read and frustrating it was.
100% of our members loved this book. It was a fun quick read but there was plenty to talk about. Most of us have been touched by Aspargers or autism or special needs in some way, so the book led to some interesting personal discussion.
We all learned a lot about China, that's for sure. But this book was very hard to read because of all its details and names. Only two of us completed the book in a month.
We read this book in the midst of turmoil with police shootings. It sparked much discussion and the provided questions were quite good. We found the writing a little awkward at times, but we all found that once you got past the first 150 pages it became a fast read.
I found this book to be a fascinating if difficult story of the part of WWII we rarely study in school. Well written with only a few repetitive facts. When you are feeling sorry for yourself, think of these people in these horrid situations and their resilience.
