My Reviews
Charming and Funny!
Mysterious and Suspenseful!
Overcoming obstacles!
A quick read, in 4 hours. Enjoyable start to finish. Light but sweet. Loved the New England faux island setting. Reminds me how much I love bookstores.
Read this book in one sitting. Much more addictive and suspenseful than "Gone Girl."
Not only was this memoir a thoroughly enjoyable read, but the story also provided our club with our most interesting discussion ever.
Even though most members stated that they disliked the story (& characters), this book provided us with an extremely intense intellectual discussion of literary style, politics, history, and even humor!
Book clubs are for breaking you of old habits: Don't always read the same genre!!! I loved this story partly because it was different but also because I learned a lot about bees. Very satisfying read.
Kept waiting for something exciting to happen...like watching paint dry
I would have liked this book much better if I knew whether or not Faina is real. That's all I can say.
Instead of evaluating the book, each of us answered 4 Questions of our choosing from a list of Questions, some designed for women who were mothers and some designed for women who were not mothers. (See Below)
After 250 pages, I just didn't care whodunnit. Editor, you dropped the ball! Too slow!
After reading "A Man Called Ove," this story was disappointing. If I had read this book first, I never would have picked up "A Man Called Ove" which was far more enjoyable. (By the way, I loved the movie, "A Man Called Ove," too!)
Amazing author! Read every book she has written! Absolutely addicted! (Then watch the series!)
Absolutely addicted to this author! Read all her books in the series in order! Don't let the length keep you away! Learned history of Jacobites, better than any class in school, plus some Gaelic!
Usually, our discussions are like High School English class where we answer a list of questions pertaining to interpreting the author's meaning. For this book, we discussed the way we feel about keeping and revealing secrets and the meaning of friendship in our lives.
Before you watch the tv series (or even if you have already seen it), read the book to fully understand the dystopian world Atwood created.
Your kids are going to read this for school so you can simply read it with them!
It was hard to read some parts that were upsetting (like all her books) but overall it was an excellent story. Very highly recommended!
Very upsetting (but I couldn’t put it down either). Not something I would have chosen on my own. Good thing there are book clubs! Glad to have continued my research online and learned even more about the progress of the case. A great book if you have the guts!
Gives excellent description of small town life in 1906 USA south from perspective of well-to-do white family. Also a love story but in an unexpected way. Takes a while to get used to the lingo of the era/place.
Charming escape.
I wondered, “Can an entire book be about one man in one hotel for his whole life? And would that be interesting?!” But the answer is obviously “Yes! And it is!” A rich story filled with details on every page. Not a quick read but absolutely worthwhile. Extremely highly recommended.
Another book that I never would have purchased; luckily, book clubs encourage me to read outside my usual comfort zone! Particularly interested in two chapters but overall a “MUST” read for every woman in the USA. Open your mind and open this book!
Cannot recommend a book like this. Very disappointing ending. Absolutely pointless. Possibly interesting to those who relish literary style over plot.
Gives insight into a world I never would encounter on my own. Still can’t possibly understand how such families feel. Positive messages for teens. Extremely highly recommended!
Ordinarily I would be upset about recommending a book in the “dead children” genre but this was a really satisfying page-turner, and I always adore a prep school setting. For YA fans, or murder mystery fans.
Incredibly, this was required summer reading at my last school, one of the few required books that were enjoyable. Non-fiction that reads like fiction. The truth is often much more satisfying! Extremely highly recommended!
One of my favorite books of all time. Great story, learned a lot, genuine page-turner, satisfying overall. Extremely highly recommended!
If your book club hasn’t read this one yet, add it to your list immediately! Something for everyone here: statistics, legal process, news, history, fascinating stories with various endings. Gripping, educational, moving, shocking, hopeful. Non-fiction that reads like fiction half the time. An absolute “MUST” read for all. My #1 recommendation since I read it.
Mostly common sense advice for feminists but the descriptions of the specific cultural attitudes were very interesting. Organized and easy to follow on audio. Some suggestions won’t work for every person so it’s not a one-size-fits-all guide.
A “must-read” book, now at the top of my list of recommendations. Never before did such a long story seem to fly by so quickly. You know you love a story when you’re sorry it’s over. Excellent novel!
At the top of my current list of recommendations, a “must-read” story, especially for New Yorkers and fans of historical fiction. How often do you read two absolutely amazing novels in a row?! Rush to buy this book and then read the other by the same author, also fabulous.
Well written, expressing emotions vividly.
Fabulous adventure showing women’s strength, physically and emotionally.
Favorite book of 2020! A must-read for all…mixed-genre historical fiction/fantasy/romance/mystery.
I could not possibly have anticipated how much I would enjoy it!
One of my all-time favorite authors!
