My Reviews
I read this book quickly and enjoyed it, even the startling and horrifying conclusion. However it didn't generate much discussion at our meeting. Well plotted and interesting, very dark, but "Galveston" didn't leave us a whole lot to debate.
Truly one of my favorite books ever. I have read it twice and I'm sure I will read it again. So beautifully written, but also with an intricate plot and unique characters that finally intersect in a thrilling and uplifting conclusion. The first time I raced through it, devoured it, and the second time I savored every word.
I approached this book with a little dread due to its subject matter and the author being a doctor. But not only was it beautifully written, it taught me so much about aging and how to spend your end time (or ease someone else's last days) with grace and courage and a minimum of unnecessary medical intervention.
I stole that from someone on Amazon, but it sums it up nicely. Too long, too convoluted, too many coincidences that didn't ring true. Just this side of a romance novel in my opinion. Several in my book club enjoyed the intertwining stories and we had a good discussion about family histories, adoption, and The Secret Garden. Several of us found tiresome the fairy tales that are interspersed within the chapters.
You'll never figure out "what really happened" because this story operates on several different planes. But I think the author pulled it off very nicely. It's well-written and engrossing although several in our book club found it too confusing to be worth the effort.
