My Reviews
I have always loved animals and knew a bit about elephants, but my heart is changed forever after reading this book. Ms. Picoult researches her subjects well so not only did I experience a great read filled with emotion (I cried within first few chapters) but I learned something as well. I did not want to put this book down once I started and my world view has changed because of it.
Let me preface by saying that I do admire the author. She is an excellent writer with a gift for detail. We had difficulty with the theme of suicide. I pushed through till the end because I did get attached to the characters and wanted to see what would happen. We all had trouble following the names (thank goodness for the family tree). At times, I admit I thought less words could be used to get to the juicy parts quicker. Not my favorite book-but I did like it and the writing is excellent.
We loved the book but due to the subject matter, it was difficult at times. Once we struggled past the beginning, we were enthralled by the writing and the characters. The book got better and better. EXCELLENT writing... We are considering reading more by this author.
This is a book of great depth! I was inspired by the main character and her perseverance and just plain guts. I could not put the book down.
Some in my group found the book sad-but overall-I was truly inspired by this woman. I loved reading about someone in another culture and while she may not have been valued/important in her culture-she was a woman of substance.
