The right of passage for a boy on his journey to becoming a man can be many things. Kevin's journey meanders through pain and loss, youthful curiosity, hard lessons about life and people, and into an ultimate struggle for survival. He brings the reader with him, through the deep woods and onto demolished mountain tops, carving a path through prejudice, shame and hatred. One cannot help but equate his time with many of the political, social and environmental issues still being argued today.
This book was thought provoking in many ways. It made your heart weep for Kevin's loss, laugh at his antics, get angry at the brutal prejudices, and shake your head at the greediness of man and the harm it causes. Get ready for a wild tramp in the woods with this book!
