Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright

Inspiring, Romantic, Optimistic
Thought it was all to easily wrapped up in the end

Overall it was a nice, easy read. I loved the idea of the "Wednesday Letters" and the drama they created for the 3 children but at the end, God saved everyone. And while I know God does save, it made the end too neat and unbelievable.

Liked the book overall

I enjoyed this book and reading about Liz's search for pleasure, God and balance. I loved her time in Italy, and although I thought she over wrote her experience in India I found it very interesting. Her time in Bali seemed like a hoot! She writes very well and it was easy to just keep reading!

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

Beautiful, Insightful, Romantic
It was difficult to get through

I didn't particularly care for this story. Our club thought that maybe we lost something in the translation. I didn't understand all the suicides and the alienation of the main male character while understandable somehow didn't connect for me.

Teacher Man: A Memoir by Frank McCourt

Informative, Interesting, Poorly Written
Not a favorite

I loved Angela's Ashes and was really looking forward to this story. But the more I read the more whiny I thought he was... I ran out of time to finish it before our book club and after our discussion, didn't bother to finish. I did enjoy some of the classroom stories and immigrant stories but I didn't get the impression he ever enjoyed the life he was living.

The Christmas Shoes by Donna VanLiere

If you need a good cry, read this!

This was an easy read and I would have finished it much quicker if I didn't have to keep stopping because I was crying and needed another tissue! It's a sweet story and makes you appreciate the love of family and friends. I would have liked it better though if the characters had been developed more.

Wonderful book

As I read this book, I had to look for pictures of foot binding because it was so hard and painful for me to picture. I loved reading about the bonds the girls made with each other and their family relationships. The historical and cultural aspects of the book were fascinating as well. And the misunderstanding on the fan I think is relevant even today with the way we communicate online thru email and instant messaging.

Great Read!!

I loved this book for a variety of reasons... great writing, and it was so interesting learning about circus culture in the 30's, and I loved reading the parts when Jacob was 90 or 93.

Interesting, Beautiful, Informative
History of Painted Drum and lives of an appraiser and her mother

Didn't like this book much but it did lead to a fun discussion.
The book is divided into sections and the sections about the history of the drum were very interesting but the rest was very disjointed and we couldn't see a meaningful connection between the sections.
Hard book to get into....

Interesting read

I liked this book better than I thought I would. I liked the trip across America that highlighted parts of the American experience and I like how Rinpoche helped Otto explore his thoughts on spirituality.

Great discussion

I really liked this book. I thought it was interesting and well written. I also thought it was an honest recollection of her experience. Some in my club thought she was whiny and irresponsible for being so ill prepared for her trip, but I thought she was just young and had no guidance. She wanted to do one thing that would help define her and change her and she did it.

Light, easy read

I liked this story. It was easy to read and moved along well. CeeCee had a difficult young life with a sad, mentally ill mother and an unfit father but is "saved" by a caring great Aunt and her maid and friends.

The Light Between Oceans: A Novel

I really liked this book. I thought the character development was great and I really felt for the characters. I loved reading about how it felt to be on Janus and the work of the light house keeper.
