My Reviews
Our club members enjoyed the book. It was refreshing reading a memoir. We had great discussions about the religious morality, children\\\'s upbringing, and educational emphasis of the book.
The characters each had their own personality that lent to the storyline in an interesting fashion. The theme of "the love of books" is surrounded by a twist in the story as the lives of these characters are developed. The ending was a little weak.
This book was written "open-ended". It left much to the reader's own interpretation based on their own personal lifetime insights. Many moving passages left me contemplating life through Lila and Rev. Ames. What a lively discussion we had!
It helped me to understand people's personalities better. As well as my own as I have gradually adjusted from being introverted to becoming more extroverted over my life in order to deal with certain life situations as they came up. I believe I am an ambivert. The book helped put this into perspective.
The author has an imaginative and creative way of weaving unique characters throughout the story. It's such fun seeing the world through the eyes of the young boy Donal as he uses his "storying" to get into and out of life situations during this adventurous summer.
