My Reviews

Informative, Slow, Insightful
Okay, but there's just something missing

Everyone at our discussion agreed that there were parts of the book that were well-written. Ackerman is a skilled writer; however, it felt very much as if she added a lot of description and side bars to make the book long enough to bother with. The characters are compelling, but there is just too little of them and too much unnecessary detail.

Insightful, Dramatic, Brilliant
One of the best I've read!

The characters and events of this book stay with you long after you've finished reading. Hosseini has woven a story that made me want to reread it again as soon as I finished. People introduced as children return as adults, and the story and characters are compelling. The other thing that I particularly enjoyed was the insight into the culture and history of a country I knew little about.

Important and thought-provoking

This is an important book for anyone wanting to understant the new world in which Americans are competing. I loved this book because it was a real eye-opener. Reading it made me aware of changes in the world economy and the impact that they have on our everyday lives. It is long and certainly not a light read, but it is vital reading!

Takes you on a memory trip

The discussion of this book involved as much sharing of our own memories of the time as discussion of the book. Many of the reactions were because we either remembered the same things or our recollections varied. The book sparked lively discussion and lots of laughter.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

This will give you much to talk about!

Alice Walker has created a book that engrosses the reader. The minute you finish, you want to find someone to talk about the book. Great characters and lots of themes to discuss.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Difficult, Insightful, Adventurous
Lyric and rich - a fantastic book

This is one of my favorite books. Hurston's writing moves from the gritty dialect of the region and people to a lyric, poetic prose that sweeps you away. It is a masterfully told story about finding your true self and living fully.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Brilliant, Insightful, Inspiring
No better book!

This book is my all time favorite. I have never tired of reading and talking about it. The characters offer much to discuss. Atticus Finch is one of the great characters in literature - an admirable man who inspires. Scout's curiosity, Miss Maudie's practicality, Calpurnia's wisdom, Boo's kindness, Mrs. Dubose's strength, and Aunt Alexandra's grit and loyalty all offer something to think about. The book's message on race and class is something that we have, unfortunately, not lost our need for - the lessons here are as vital in our time as they were in Maycomb...

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

Love this book. It is a great example of a Southern novel! I also think it is one that would be enjoyed by my teens as well as my mother in her 80s.

I LOVED this book!! It is being added to my list of favorites with To Kill a Mockingbird, The Secret Life of Bees, Pat Conroy's books... I love a wonderful Southern storyteller and this one fits the bill!
