My Reviews
I thought the book was a very quick read, it contained nice short chapters that made reading it in shorter blocks of time easier. This house is called blackbird house because there is a blackbird who lives there throughout all the changes in ownership in the course of 200 years. Is the blackbird good luck or bad luck? Alice HOffman does a great job with symbolism in this book.
I didn't think I would like a book about building cathedrals. The book was very captivating and I got so engrossed in the characters I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. Some of the characters had such bad luck, yet they rose above that luck every time. I was surprised on how quick of a read it was considering it was 973 pages.
I really liked the book, as I love the mystery and suspense genre. The ending was a surprise and I think it kept your interest and was an easy read. It gave us alot of insight as to how the people in New Orleans have been living and trying to cope with the devastation they had when Katrina hit. Its hard to image when you aren't experiencing it first hand but I think Erica did a great job helping us to envision what it was like and how it still is continuing to come back from this event.
We had the opportunity to talk to the author as well and it was very insightful to get her thoughts on how she writes and where the ideas come from. I think speaking with the person who writes the book is a fun break from the regular book groups we have.
I thought the book was ok, but with all the hype that went with this book, I was expecting so much more. I wasn't inspired her writing. It was an easy read and her style was good, but the book didn't wow me. I think since it was over-advertised, I just expected too much.
I really liked this book. It was a great summer read and had me hooked to find out what happened to each of them. I would be nice to find that type of lifelong friendship and our book group was envious of their bond.
This is a book I normally wouldn't have picked up to read, but I found myself captivated by Rachel's spirit and all the tragedy that surrounds her. It was a quick read and definitely opened my eyes to the issues people with leprosy faced their entire lives.
This book was very difficult to finish. I had to push myself through it. It was boring and not interesting. Even the shocking ending was not captivating for me.
On the back cover the author hypes up the secretive event but I was really let down with the "tragic" issue that takes place. He oversold the book.
The characters were dull and not interesting. The plot seemed to drag, very boring read for me. Even the murder mystery was flat.
