This is the first of a long series of futuristic cop dramas (In Death series) with a comedic and romantic flair. J.D. Robb is a pen name for Nora Roberts. I love these books! They are fascinating serial killer dramas with the wonderful character development expected from Roberts. The main characters, Eve and Roarke, are terrific together and apart. As the series goes, their story just gets better and better and the introductions of other characters and relationships fuels the fun. Eve is a loner who seems to, even against her will, gather friends along the way. This is a great introduction to the characters and the series. I can't recommend this book / series enough. I've been reading them since there were only 4 books in 1996. I can't wait for the next to arrive!
