My Reviews
This is a beautiful story of life; full of shadows and light. How we deal with and even find humor in pain and suffering, and where we stand on the faith spectrum. This is my first De Vries. His writing style flows effortlessly and it's over before it seems possible, but not that terrible style that feels as if the author just quit writing. I look forward to reading more of his books.
While I feel I have a fair amount of knowledge about present-day North Korea, Ms. Kim provided me with a lot of the history, including the schism event after WWII.
I really learned of FLO last year when I visited the Biltmore. I thought I drove through nature to get to the estate and was amazed when I learned all of that 'nature' had been lovingly wrought and arranged by FLO. I couldn't wait to read more about this man. The book is long and sometimes long-winded, but I loved all the historical markers within the context of his life, and have come away much more knowledgeable about FLO, and the time period in which he lived.
I enjoyed this charming story very much. The author did a fabulous job of creating whole, believable, flawed, and lovable characters. It’s been a while since I’ve been so moved by a work of fiction.
This statement remains a theme throughout. In a very short book, Ms. Taylor manages to create an authentic feel for the process of aging in our society. How indeed does one manage to remain relevant while accommodating losses of friendship, mobility, and purpose? Yet it is so beautifully written that you won't for one moment regret reading it.
I listened to 84, Charing Cross Road on audio. It was very well done and I believe added to the story because the voices were excellent and help flesh out the characters of this short book. Not every book has to be epic & life-changing. Fun is good. I enjoyed it immensely.
