My Reviews
Brilliantly written. Thought provoking. Excellent book for deep and meaningful discussion. Easy to read, not easy to digest.
We all agreed...this book is not worthy of a book club discussion. It is not well written, and appears to be a quick attempt to jump on the success of the previous book by the author and her publishers. We do not understand all the "buzz" and the bestseller status.
There is not one character in this book that hooked me into wanting to read more. They are psychologically interesting. However, they do not have any redeeming qualities, which I find neccessary even in flawed protagonists. Our club chose the book in part because it takes place in the area of Chicago in which we live. Fun for that reason.
Very topical considering the current political climate in the United States. Well written and insightful.
Our book club did not find this book met the expectations of reviews. We felt there were many implausible plot devices. There are several mental health professionals in the group who felt that the family issues were the reason for the outcome rather than racial discrimination.
