My Reviews
All members of our book club agreed this book was disappointing. The ending was not belieavable, the characters were inconsistent and weak, and some parts of the book were so outlandish as to suggest you were reading 2 separate books (or as one member joked - "it was like having a commercial for an action movie interjected into the book").
Overall, it did not lend itself well for discussion.
Our discussion mostly centered around why this book is a "classic." Apparently, many people find it humorous, and although some of us tried to view it that way, it was almost impossible to laugh at such pathetic and ignorant behavior. I would not choose to read it again.
The general consensus was that although we agreed the author was a good writer, none of us could garner much sympathy for her. She seemed self-absorbed and her constant antidotes about her life of privilege were annoying. We did not find it exhilarating, only despressing.
