My Reviews
There were a few sections of the book that felt a little far-fetched. However, it was a very quick read and enjoyable. I can see this book being made into a movie.
I rated this book so high because it was so well executed and written. The story line was not one that I would typically read. However, being a new Mom, I really connected with the characters and the difficult choices that will come with motherhood and raising a family.
The format of this book - a collection of short stories about a woman named Olive Kitteridge - was difficult to get through at times. The chapters provided such a good ending point, it was sometimes easy to put the book down and return to it later. But, once you get invested in the book, the last few chapters are page turners. Extremely well executed and beautifully written. I can see why this won a Pulitzer.
I cannot recommend this book more. I was dreading reading another World War Two epic but after making it through the first chapter - which was a little slow - I was completely invested in the characters and couldn't wait to see how the two stories intersected.
I thought the book was interesting and provided a good account of what life would have been like in the 1800s on a European-settled Caribbean island. My only complaint was that there were so many interesting characters, it was a shame the author didn't break the book into a series to expand each story. I did also enjoy that the book was based on real people.
We selected this book because it is a Classic that most people read in high school and also because it is very short (~85 pages) so a quick read. Consensus was that everyone enjoyed re-reading a Classic as an adult. The book has strong political overtones and offered a great discussion. Following the book, I'd like to learn more about Russian history.
