My Reviews
I loved this book. The author alternates among the stories of the 4 strong, principled, and courageous women in a highly readable way. If the stories, conversations and actions of these women don't draw you in, perhaps the depiction of everyday life during the Civil War will. I've read several books on the Civil War but never one that showed life as this one did. A different time. The word "Civil" could describe the war as compared to wars of today. Even if you're not into non-fiction, try this book.
My club as a group didn't like this book. Couldn't understand why the characters acted the way they did (not wanting to introduce spoilers here). Why didn't they just tell the truth to each other if they loved each other as they claimed?
It's not often that everyone agrees, but on this book we all did. We are within 1 hr of the setting in Gastonia, NC so the book was especially relavent to us. The main character is a real revelation, a very young, resilient, strong-willed woman, who really lived and who was a forerunner of activism. I recommend this book for book clubs.
