My Reviews
A Prayer for Owen Meany leads to good discussion. It is a rather long read, so you need the time to devote to it. It is a unique story that evolves over a long period of time in the lives of 2 young boys. It is a story of relationships, spiritual beliefs - faith versus doubt, mysteries, humor, and one very interesting character!
If I Live to Be 100 is an easy read. Each chapter introduces us to a new character and the reader learns their secret for living into old age. I used the last few blank pages of the book for writing down their advice and came up with a list that makes good sense to me! I had a greater appreciation for aging, the aged, and for those who care for them. After reading this book I wanted to check in the older people I know and just talk to them.
This is a hard read that takes some time, but it is well worth it.
Not my favorite! I couldn't understand where Chris McCandless was coming from ... I just didn't see his reasoning. I don't think he was fair to his parents. They were more understanding than I think I would have been. It was diffinitely a different read if you are looking for that in a book.
Pope Joan's story was more than the possibility of a woman pope. It was the story of a girl's drive and desire to learn and achieve regardless of the obstacles. This is a story that truely demonstrates the value of learning and continuing to learn and where that learning can take you.
In rereading Huck Finn as an adult I took so much more away from it than as a high school student. Of course, there are the social issues where most want to focus, but I looked at if from the adventure. I realized how limited I have been when it come to true adventures - tackling something/anything with an unknown outcome. Huck's ability to seek, survive and enjoy adventures stirred me to be a little more adventurous! I also enjoyed the friendship between Jim and Huck and the wisdom they shared barring education and civilization. What do you really have to have to have all you want?
A well written book, with no likeable characters. Lesson to learn from this book ... open your mail!
This is an interesting story of a time and history of growing up as a Chinese girl. The story provides good discussion about family life, survival, and about being born a girl in this culture and at this time. How lucky we felt to have been born in this time and culture where things are different and opportunities abound.
Oxygen gets better as you read. Somehow it hooks you into caring and wanting to know how it's going to end. Great discussion for groups - guilt, trust, friendship, forgiveness, relationships and eye-opening for what goes on during surgery!
Our book club had a fun discussion with this book. We also enjoyed playing a few of the list activities. We appreciated the humor, and loved the many characters and side stories to the "list". While light, the book still offered solid advice regarding living and what it is that we really want to do in our lives.
