The Water Museum: Stories by Luis Alberto Urrea

Brilliant
The Water Museum

This collection of short stories encompasses a wide range of characters and perspectives, set in the midwest and southwest U.S. The writing style is spare, but brilliant and beautiful. One overriding theme is how to find meaning in life in difficult circumstances--powerfully presented.

Daniel Deronda by George Eliot

Unconvincing, Boring, Slow
Daniel Deronda

This is George Eliot's final novel. She interweaves the stories of two characters, Gwendolyn and Daniel, who have a brief, immediate connection that, for Gwendolyn becomes the love of her life, while for Daniel, it becomes a "moment," but not the soul connection that his Jewish roots ultimately provides him. The descriptions are quite detailed, and the book is long--for some of us, this was an unwieldy combination.
