Learned so much

I enjoyed learning about the two different women who have brought their strength and vision to the Supreme Court. While they were different in personality and life journey to the court, the book highlights the many ways they had to work around the "men's club" mentality that is a part of our lives still. I knew "of" these two women before the book but now I have a better understanding of the important role they played in women's equality in the US.

Excellent - especially for a book club

I enjoyed the connection from the earliest days in Africa and how the book connected the genealogy of each generation. You were able to see how the environment and traditions of each generation impacted them. I did have to follow the family tree provided in the front as each chapter is written in a specific character's voice and that helped me keep track of the family tree and which side they were from within that. I learned about the difficult role women played throughout the extended history of slavery. It started great conversations in our book club and we all agreed that we were amazed that this was the work of a 26 year old writer. I am passing it on to other friends to read - not something I do with every book we read.

Once Upon A Town

An easy read about a community that came together to serve soldiers traveling to go serve in the war. We were lucky to have a leader who lived in Nebraska during that time and she brought us maps and told us about the context of that time - she even had her family's ration books from those days to share. It made the story come alive for us. Do a bit of study on the history of the state and people of that time to help understand the time and the people more.

We all enjoyed the book!

This is one book all of our book club enjoyed - for dufferent reasons. It's an easy read & some of the story lines are just too obvious yet, there are great twists & development of the characters. We all jumped into the discussion & had different parts of the book we connected to or had more question about in the story.

This book challenged me to learn more about the history of those impacted by Jim Crow laws & “reform” schools.
