My Reviews

Interesting read. Tiffany makes me really appreciate the problems of my 13-year-old.

Overall, we felt it was a fun and easy read. It kept us entertained and we all thought the writing was quality. A few of us had trouble with the author's ego, but we all decided he'd have to be pretty confident to take on a teenager!

Comments from our book club members:

I enjoyed reading the book. and felt o.k. in sending it to my 14 yr old granddaughter as I felt she
would like it too.It does make one stop and think about life and times in this century. Although
they may not be to far removed from the last one.

I enjoyed the book. It communicated the frustrations on raising a teenager, including how to have a personal life while you are attempting to raise the child. I didn't know if I would appreciate hearing about "gay" lifestyle but it wasn't pushed in your face. you could focus on the child/adult relationship and not on the sexual topics.
Easy to read - fast read.
Didn't dig too deep in anything, but covered the main feelings of the people involved.

I thought the writer was incredibly self-centered and self-congratulatory. In fact, he was so full of himself that there was very little room in the book for a reader. I had to put it down and walk away so I could start on my own memoir in the same vein: "Why I Am the Best Parent Who Ever Lived." (The working subtitle is: "I Am Also the Coolest Straight Woman You Will Ever Meet.")
I thought the cover design was great, though.

I wasn't at the meeting, but I found the book a little pretentious. I felt that it was something only a person who describes himself as hip could write. If you call yourself hip, you can bet that you're not.
It was "OK" but I didn't fall in love with the story mainly because I felt the author thought way too much of himself.

The book was a quick read. At times it felt like it was more about the author than the niece. Would love to see it from Tiffany's perspective. I enjoyed it and it was fun to read.

Night (Night) by Elie Wiesel

Life Changing, Insightful, Dramatic
Wiesel really makes you think and question

We had a great discussion on this book. Could the holocaust happen today? It was easy to see how the Jews were lulled into a sense of optimism by the small steps taken by the Nazis to eventually put them in the death camps. Wiesel's story is amazing in a time where we don't think things like this could ever happen. It's hard to think that the holocaust only happened 60 years ago. The book is really hard to put down once you start.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

Informative, Dramatic, Adventurous
Our book club loved it.

This is not a book I would have picked up on my own because of the vampires, but it was recommended by another member and we read it as a group. Almost everyone in the group was intrigued more by the history and the mystery of it than by the fact that it was centered around vampires. This would have to be on my list of all-time favorite books because of the historical basis.

My 9-year-old son loved this!

I haven't read this yet, but my 9-year-old read it and absolutely loved it. In fact, at today he is giving a demonstration in class on one of the recipes from the book. It is a recipe for monster repellent using a lemon, a stick of butter, 20 inches of red string, and his bare hands. He is really looking forward to trying it out for the class and telling them all about the book. He also loved the names of the people and the places in the book. Good 9-year-old humor.

It spurred some great discussion!

Most in the group really liked it, a couple didn't, but it did spur some great discussion. We were all a little puzzled by the Rosemary character and I felt she was just a tool the author was using to get David through his transformation/catharsis. I didn't relate to David and Norah much, but I thought they were meant to be rather shallow, self-centered characters. I did like the nurse Caroline and her compassion and boundless dedication to Phoebe. It's a good read and a great discussion starter.
