My Reviews
Incredible story, well-written!
I don't understand how this book got such high ratings. Just day to day actions of a man that's confined in a hotel. Very slow-moving story so it didn't keep my interest.
I had a hard time plodding through this book. It was informative and I learned a lot about the Chicago World Fair, but maybe there was too much info about it (okay, I get it already - there were a lot of delays and hurdles in the building of the fair). The only thing that kept me going was reading more about the serial killer.
This should be a required reading for middle school students. Great book. The author did a wonderful job of describing the frustrations and thoughts of a girl with cerebral palsy.
I truly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down! Loved each of the characters. First book I ever read about vaudeville.
Worth reading!
Very informative book of the Japanese part of WWII
I'm glad I read the book, but I struggled to finish. There were many names in the story, which was confusing for me. Yet it was interesting to read about the Jewish practices and beliefs during Bible times.
Our book club loved this book. The main character, Lily, is an unforgettable personality!
I learned so much about the Chinese culture in the early 1900s.
What a childhood this person had! Good balance of information on apartheid, tragedy and humor.
Such a wonderful story about a mother’s love for her child, regardless of circumstances. Our entire book club enjoyed this.
Our book club was delighted to receive this book as a giveaway, however, most of us were pretty disappointed in the content. Although the author had a a beautiful way with words in describing the landscape or characters, many members were not impressed with the amount of profanity and sexual content. In addition, the book seemed to have too much conversation and not enough suspense or action. Guess it wasn’t up to our expectations based on the description of the book that was given.
This was one of those can’t-put-it-down books. I loved how the 1939 chapters connected with the present day chapters at the end.
I really enjoyed this book. The author did an excellent job of developing each main character in the story. The book also had some unique features in addition to the main story by using taped interviews and Guinness world records. This story is a good reminder that everyone has a purpose on this earth.
This book was hard to put down. Ms. Westover had such an unusual childhood due to her bipolar, zealous father, her subservient, homeopathic mother, and one extremely abusive brother. Because of her Mormon upbringing and the eccentric teachings of her father, I could understand how breaking ties with some family members was such a struggle for her. So impressed with her ability to obtain multiple college degrees without formal education at the elementary or secondary levels and very little exposure to world events while growing up.
The first time I read this book, I read maybe the first 100 pages and discontinued because I wasn’t impressed. Restarted the book 6 months later and this time I loved it! I saw so much humor in the story. What a unique writer!
This is one of those ‘wow’ books about people who were judged guilty for crimes they did NOT commit, people given unreasonable prison sentences, etc. it really made you think that our justice system may be flawed, particularly if you are poor and don’t have the means to get private legal assistance. Very eye-opening!
