Wife of the Gods

Worth reading if only for the information about the practice of giving a daughter to a "god" in order to break a family's bad luck streak. Interesting look at a culture

Dead Wake

A good book, but not as good as some of Larson's others, such as Devil in the White City and In the Garden of the Beasts. His description of the passengers was superficial and did not pull me in with sympathy for them. I was fascinated with the parts about Schweigert and Uboat 20. Also with the failures on the part of the British Government and a young Churchill. Also, the picture of Wilson was informative and explained his failure of leadership.

The Golden Age

Its no wonder that this book has received so many awards. Set in Perth, Australia in the early 50s,it takes place a former pub named The Golden Age, which has been converted into a hospice for children who have been stricken by polio. Don't start this book unless you have some time to read, as everyone in my club says they were hooked at page 2. All of the characters come to life in this funny, sad, serious, historic story. For those of us old enough to remember the days before the Salk vaccine, it will ring true. Don't miss this one.

The Danish Girl

Much more to the story than the movie, this book describes the relationship between Greta Waud and her husband Einar Wegener, and eventually their relationship with Lily Elba, the woman Einar becomes. Set in Copenhagen, Paris and Dresden, the locations become characters in the novel. "Set in the glitz and glamor of 1920s Copenhagen Paris and Dresden, this stunning first novel explores the boundaries of sex and gender, love and marriage and the journey to become oneself", say the cover. Based on the journals of the Wegeners, the novel rings as a true story, although the author has taken some liberties with certain facts. A book that is hard to put down. Be prepared for a long weekend of page turning
