My Reviews

A great story

Chen has a colorful way of explaining his plight as the child of a landlord in Communist China. This book helped me realize the mindset of people who are coming from this region. Throughout much of this book, I identified with Chen in that people of certain social status are treated in a certain manner in an effort to maintian their own social status. Chen breaks through this status using his mind and spirit.

I truly enjoyed the book and recommend it to others.

A Sweet Theif

This is a great story of love in a world of hate. Liesel an adopted child raised in Nazi Germany learns to love the Jew in her basement and love words through stolen books.
This story was the mirror image of Anne Frank from the German perspective.
Narrated by Death, this story is far from sad. A good read with quirky little graphics.

New York Through The Eyes of an Artist

As a NY'er I really enjoyed the detail of the historical districts. I've never envisioned NY the way Florence has. The book was so well written by the author, one feels as though you are speaking directly to Florence.

This is also a great way to look at American history, the lives of socialites and those trying to "keep up with the Jones'".

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

How Can Poverty Be So Funny???

Insightful, witty and outright hilarious at times; Jeannette Walls captures the reality of her family without making you feel sad for her.

I listened to this book on CD and most times I wanted to jump out of my seat because the trials and tribulations the Walls family endured were gut wrenching. This book is not what you think.

The one thing I took away from this book is determination. With enough determination, one is capable of anything, even rising from Americas most poverty stricken environment.

This is a good read!!!

Caught Up In The Moment

I think overall this was a great book. The series of events at the start of the book keep the reader engaged. Reader beware -- if you're not familiar with some biblical terms, you may be put off or lost temporarily.

As one of my book club members noted, "Enger gets a little caught up in his own prose about half way through the book". The book lingers for a bit before it becomes captivating again.

Although I give this book 3 out of 5 stars, I will admit that the prose was great! I loved his description of objects like fog and the morning. It was great and helped expand my use of certain words.

Give it a try - you might like it.
