Dramatic story, interesting historical perspective

WWII backdrop to this story but with a Turkish point of view. Proof that good men (and women) did not sit by and do nothing in the face of Nazi evil. Sacrifices were made, risks taken and lives were saved. However, somehow the translation from the original Turkish left the reader somewhat detached from the main characters which deadened the impact of an otherwise powerful story.

Discovery and danger in remote Honduran jungle

Fascinating story of lost civilization discovery found deep in remote, dense, inhospitable Honduran jungle found using ultra modern laser/radar detection technology. Site was undisturbed for more than 500 years. Second half of book devoted to deadly parasitic disease prevalent in the region, its effect on humans and its spread north as a result of global warming.

Through crucible of apartheid with sense of humor intact

Inside view of the insidious, misguided colonial system of apartheid from Noah's personal experiences growing up in South Africa. Anecdotes from childhood to adulthood written with insight and wry sense of humor. His fiercely independent and indomitable mother gave him the love and tools he needed to not only survive but to develop his gifts and thrive despite his surroundings. Very good read.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely

Very well researched and written story of the brutal treatment and systematic murders of members of the Osage tribe in the 1920's. The patronizing treatment of the Osage people by the US government only served to make the situation worse, creating the opportunity for predators to take advantage tribe members. Ironic that this tragedy gave Hoover the chance he needed to establish the FBI and his power base which he used for the next 50 years to take political advantage of individuals on whom he had acquired damaging information.

The gifted artistic woman behind a brutish man.

32 years before women could vote and 90 years before women's rights became a movement, Clara Wolcott Driscoll designed exquisite stained glass art (lamps, windows, objects d'art) for the brutish Louis Tiffany and led a group of under paid and unappreciated women who built them under his name. Excellent research and background; very well written. Reads like a fast-paced novel.

Adventurous, Dramatic, Interesting

The story itself was interesting and had it been better presented it could have been a great read. The characters were poorly developed and unconvincing using dialogue that did not seem to fit the time and place. At times the book dragged and other times details that would have made the characters more sympathetic were glossed over. Altogether a disappointment.

Interesting, Inspiring, Insightful

A masterful tribute to the power of friendships to support and enrich one’s life journey. Inspiring story of two iconic women and their personal as well as professional relationship.
