My Reviews
I enjoyed the way this book was organized. Elizabeth Gilbert is a wonderful writer. I found the book to be a tad self-indulgent, but overall she is funny, witty and very revealing. It's a good "book club" choice because her uncoventional life will certainly make one think. A fun read!
This is the first book that we read in our club. It is a well written account of one woman's love of rowing, nature and adventure. It leaves the reader breathless with its descriptions. She has been to places that most of us will never see. She has experienced the natural world in ways that most of us never will. These folks do not just "camp" or "hike". They encounter bears, rouge waves, and isolation that is frankly dangerous at times. It is a fascinating book that will intrigue anyone who has ever wanted to experience the outdoors.
I read this book very quickly. I had a difficult time putting it down. If you enjoy history, and particularily the Depression-era stuff then you will probably like this story. The ending seemed a little hurried, or maybe it's just that I didn't want the book to end. Regardless, I think this is a terrific book.
This is a cleverly crafted novel with inherent life messages that will lend great discussion to any book club.
This woman can write. She is so gifted and reading this novel is a way to appreciate the English language.
Unfortunately, the subject matter is extremely depressing. So, while I enjoyed her ability to create imagery I struggled to get past the ugliness of the story and the characters.
