A Spool of Blue Thread: A novel by Anne Tyler
Book Club Recommended
Insightful, Boring, Pointless
A Spool of Blue ThreadTyler once said she prefers characterization to plot, and that's apparent in this book. Spool studies three generations of the Whitshank family--nearly in reverse chronological order. It's a meditation on the nature of family--how a family comes to see itself, how people end up pigeonholed into specific family roles, and the effect of growing older on family relationships. Excellent character study.
