My Reviews
This is a book that I would probably not have selected myself but I am so very glad the I have read! The first 90 pages or so were fine (didn't grab me), but after that I could not put it down. It was facinating in may ways. I learned much about life and religon in the ninth century and in particular the lives of women during that time. Whether you believe that there could have been a Pope Joan or not, this book is a great read. Our club had a lively, enjoyable, discussion of the book. Everyone enjoyed it. I highly recommend it for anyone and especially for book clubs.
It opens your eyes to how people lived in the times of slavery. The local dialect used for much of it was sometimes difficult to understand; had to reread sentences.
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't stop. The author paints vivid pictures in your mind of places, people, and events (Hurricane Hugo). The characters become your friends. It's a great book for a reading group, offering up much for discussion. A sequel is due out in July 2010 and I can't wait to read on about the characters and where they go from the end of this book.
