My Reviews

A Man Called Ove: A Novel by Fredrik Backman

Fun, Insightful, Beautiful

Because A Man Called Ove is so slow, I struggled to reach the point, which—when revealed—was poignant. Although a sweet read, I wish the journey had been more engaging.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

Interesting, Inspiring, Dramatic

The Glass Castle remains one of my all time favorites! I have often wondered at the “inside” lives of the desperate and poverty stricken homeless we sometimes cross. This book takes you there and holds back nothing. Great read!

Still Life by Louise Penny

Adventurous, Interesting, Informative

My book club’s all-time favorite! We were, one and all, immediately captivated by the story and held fast when we fell in love with the characters. I would have never read this, so I am tickled that a book club member suggested it; otherwise, I would have missed this gem. Read it!

Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns

Interesting, Fantastic, Beautiful

To Kill a Preacher by E Paul Jones

Informative, Confusing, Beautiful

Although poorly written, the story was engaging and insightful—written by a participant and trusted member of the community!

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Fun, Addictive, Dramatic

Big Little Lies is a difficult read because of the racist stereotypes and subject matter. I am unsure if such characterization was purposefully done in order to focus on the discrimination or nit. My book club did have much discussion about racism, making the read worthwhile; however, I found the generalizations proved irritating, which is why I rated this book three stars and labeled it “difficult.”

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman

Compelling

The plot is one that grabs you right away, and the short chapters keep the intrigue high and the subject matter from being too morose. I read this quickly and enjoyed finding out how the characters came together, as well as discovering the sad history of the mental facilities of old. Nice book club selections! I’d read this author again.

Mindhunter

Mindhunter explains the science behind criminal acts we hear about every day while chronicling the evolution of profiling that is the personal story of John Douglas. This book is a captivating autobiography of a forensic pioneer whose ideas helped changed criminal detection in our lifetimes. Although the actual cases listed are disturbing, the raw exposition leaves us at enough distance that we can keep on reading. Fascinating!

Brilliant, Boring, Epic

This book is one of my all time favorites because the main character becomes your adopted friend. This story could be a how-to book about accepting those who are different from us while we fall in love with him and his story.

Interesting, Romantic, Beautiful

An easy and fun read, but the story was unconvincing and the premise, somewhat thin. The main character was quite judgmental for someone young and ignorant of the inner workings of state programs for children.

Fun, Optimistic, Adventurous

A fun read with different characters than my usual reads: elderly, quirky, and eccentric. I enjoyed the ride.

Addictive, Dramatic, Interesting

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Addictive, Interesting, Dramatic

Adventurous, Dramatic, Interesting

From the first chapter, I wanted to know more. Female spies during the war is NOT a boring, historical read! I didn’t want it to end!

The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen

Romantic, Informative, Interesting

Dramatic, Addictive, Beautiful

The Goldfinch deserves to be a Pulitzer winner in that it contains some of the most beautiful prose I’ve read. The atmosphere is gloomy, however, so if you are a reader who tires of rain and cloudy days, you might want to choose otherwise; but the writing is worth every minute in this book’s company.

Adventurous, Dramatic, Difficult

This book is a portrait of the addicts in our lives who try to live their addictions in secret and eventually fail, fodder for great discussions. This is not a literary masterpiece, nor do I believe it was meant to be. It is an easy read and a great way to introduce needed talking points for us all.

Dramatic, Interesting, Insightful

IF you are a Jane Austen fan, as well as a P.D.James mystery reader, you will adore this book. Engaging and absorbing, this novel answers your questions about Elizabeth Bennet’s happily ever after AND adds a mystery to boot! Loved it! (Loved the movie afterwards.)

Informative, Interesting, Insightful

I really enjoyed the book, but I wish I had more time to read it because it reads like a textbook!

Fun, Interesting, Adventurous

A truly fun read, full of endearing characters and country wisdom that warmed my heart and made me fall in love with York. Although it is set in the 40s and 50s, it speaks to now and forevermore. A new favorite!

Dramatic, Adventurous, Difficult

Great read! This book remains one of my top five favorites and began my fascination with risky adventure biographies. I no longer question why people cling the earth’s monstrosities but am morbidly drawn to their quests.

Dramatic, Informative, Adventurous

A read whose characters capture your heart and whose stories rivet you to the page. Great book club read!

Adventurous, Beautiful, Unconvincing

I enjoyed the writing but found this book somewhat predictable and—having lived this era—definitely unbelievable. I do think it was an interesting read as fiction and supposition.

This book surprised me in that it is filled with adventure until the end. I was captivated by the author and her story throughout. I expected the book to entail the difficulties of North Korean life but was moved by the personal tragedies such a regime engenders. Excellent book. I chose this for my book club, and I would highly recommend it!

I love Sam Hill!

Sam Hill (“Hell”) reminds me of Own Meany—endearing while learning life’s hardships with quiet, admirable tenacity. This coming of age story is rather predictable but an uplifting read about friendship as a shield to life’s bullies.

Dark, Graphic, Difficult

This true story of abuse was both disturbing and morbidly fascinating. I was left with questions that plague me to this day. I would read some. Pray. Read some more. Cry. Read even more.

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

Life Changing, Inspiring, Insightful

Simple life lessons that every graduateâ??and adultâ??should ponder. When you read it (such an easy read), you understand why it is a bestseller! Timeless.
