My Reviews
Greg Mortenson is an amazing individual albeit with flaws. I especially enjoyed the historical information about Pakistan and the wonderful view of the people.
Excellent writing but it was very hard for me to get interested in the "play within the book".
Excellent. Beautifully written; great character developlment and realistic description of war.
Excellent book that has a very broad scope, bringing to life this particular time in India for all of the myriad groups affected. The writing in incredibly beautiful and the subject matter dark, since in the end very little that is hopeful emerges. I thorougly enjoyed the book.
The book is set in Sunderland, England, in the 1800's. The heroine is 15 year old Gustine, who both works a day job in a pottery and is prostitute at night. The author describes in graphic detail the lot of the poor and the attitudes of the well to do. The plot is complex with a doctor who steals corpses, the spread of cholera morbus in the area, and the fate of Gustine's infant son. Writing is excellent and the issues raised are many.
The book was too long and the characters were not engaging. Some of the historical descriptions were interesting but Cormac seemed like a plot device rather than a real person.
