My Reviews

Atonement by Ian Mcewan

Not an easy read at all.

I really wanted to like this book given all the hype about the movie but found it disjointed and hard to follow. Have not discussed it yet in the book club so will be interesting to see what the other members thought.

As a dog lover - I LOVED this book!

This one was a hit with our book club...granted most of us are pet owners and can relate but we thoroughly enjoyed the emotions that the book brought out in us all.

A rich portrait of a part of Hawaii history

It is always great to read about a place that is familiar and with our book club being in Hawaii, we chose this book as our first read. What a joy. It is amazing that a male could develop (and with such richness) the characters of the women in this story. We loved this one and have recommended it to many others who had similar reactions.

Middlesex: A Novel by Jeffrey Eugenides

Great discussion from this book

I personally really liked this book, but it was not a favorite with all of our members - some could not get beyond the subject matter. However, sometimes that is when the best discussions occur and that was true with Middlesex.

Adventurous, Dramatic, Interesting
Loved it from the first page

Wonderful weaving of circus life during youth with that of growing old and memories. Lively discussion and favorable all around.

Cop Mystery in Paradise

I have to give this one a great review for several reasons. The book is set in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii where our book club is located and we were privileged to have the author Baron Birtcher attend our meeting. Lots of local color and flavor to the setting and characters plus from the author's stories, we are privy to the inspiration behind the story line and some of the characters. The second of a series of three (so far), the book not only works well as the "middle child" but stands well on its own.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

Lively discussion from this book

This book was very well-liked by every one in our book club. The letter format worked well although there were some questions about how some of the city letters worked being received almost immediately. Lively discussion regarding the time and location.

31 Hours is a thought-provoking read

Our book club won this book on Book Movement. While the material is disturbing, it is very well written and thought-provoking which lead to a great discussion and interesting observations. As a whole, our book club liked this selection alot.

Quick and interesting read

Interesting but quick read about the New York art world. Our book club enjoyed it and had a lively discussion comparing it in part to Tom Wolfe who we had just read - both sarcastic views.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus

A wonderfully composed tale of magical realism. Our book club started talking about it before we even got in the door of our hostess\\\' home. Larger than life, the circus was life and the fantastically beautiful illusions were richly woven into a story to be devoured and savored. A favorite of every single member of our book club.
